Apii Arorangi Teaches Traditional Agricultural Knowledge with Mrs Elika

apii arorangi NEWS RELEASE

At Apii Arorangi, students are engaging in an exciting hands-on learning experience through their school gardening project.

Led by their teacher, Mrs Terangi Elika, Years 3 and 4 Apii Arorangi students have been actively involved in planting and cultivating a variety of edible crops since last year. This initiative provides them with valuable knowledge about agriculture, sustainability and food production.

With a focus on science and traditional farming practices, students have been tending to crops such as kūmara, sugarcane, arrowroot and taro. Their efforts are paying off as they witness the growth and development of these staple plants firsthand, fostering a deeper understanding of the natural world, the importance of sustainable food sources and learning traditional agricultural practies.

The gardening project is part of the school’s curriculum, aiming to make learning interactive and meaningful. By getting their hands in the soil, students develop practical skills and a sense of responsibility while learning about the environmental impact of agriculture.

Apii Arorangi’s initiative aligns with national efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and healthy eating habits among young people. It also aligns with learning practices outlined under the Ministry of Education National Master Plan. The success of their gardening project serves as an inspiring example of how experiential learning can make subjects like science more engaging and relevant.

As the students continue to nurture their crops, they are not only growing plants but also cultivating a lifelong appreciation for nature, sustainability and traditional farming practices. With continued support from the school and the community, these young learners are gaining skills that will serve them well in the future.
